The Brain Advantage does for you what few business leaders have the time to do for themselves. It gives you an executive summary of the latest brain research and then shows you how to use that information. 1. So is there a lot of science and biology in this book? Because that's not exactly my cup of tea. A lot of science? No. We treat the biology of the brain lightly in this book. Instead of giving you a course in neurology, we begin each chapter with research about how people think and react. For example, what happens in our brain when we are deciding whether to condemn someone or forgive them? It turns out that our emotional brain circuits make that decision rather than our rational, thinking brain. This has implications for how leaders judge others. 2. That sounds interesting, but how useful is it? Nearly 2/3 of every chapter discusses how brain research applies to business and leadership practices. In the example above about how we judge others, we discuss how our tendency to condemn or forgive based on emotional brain circuits causes "the halo effect." You can see more about how brain research applies by reading a minicase. You can also read excerpts from The Brain Advantage and use our Discussion Guides to discuss chapters with teams. 3. Can I really change the way my brain works? Yep. Here are just two examples. Experience changes the brain. The part of the brain that understands maps and remembers directions is larger in London taxi cab drivers because of their experience. Second, you can create new, more adaptive brain circuits through the thoughts you think. For instance, people with obsessive-compulsive illness have been able to interrupt the brain’s “worry circuit” and trigger a more adaptive circuit. And when you can’t change some of counterproductive habits your brain has, you can still counteract them. How to compensate for some of the brain’s built-in limitations is a major topic in The Brain Advantage. 4. Can The Brain Advantage help me convince my spouse that my brain actually works? No. Nothing convinces spouses. (But our book might help you understand the reactions
